The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) reported Q2 2026 results on September 11, 2026. Identical sales grew 0.2% on a headline basis, which sounds soft until you add back the 265 basis points of external headwinds that hit the number this quarter. New CEO Gregory Foran, 200 days into the job, maintained full-year profit guidance while cutting the sales outlook, called out more operational opportunity than he expected when he started, and described the turnaround with a phrase worth taking seriously: "a little better every day. In a lot of places. At once."

What they reported

Identical sales without fuel grew 0.2% in Q2, below the prior guidance of 1% to 2%. Traffic was positive, which matters โ€” customers are coming in, they're just buying fewer items per basket. Adjusted FIFO operating profit of $1.076 billion. Adjusted EPS of $1.09, up 5% year-over-year. FIFO gross margin excluding fuel increased 13 basis points, with ecommerce profitability, retail media, and sourcing savings contributing, partially offset by higher shrink and transportation costs. OG&A expenses increased 33 basis points versus the prior year, driven by planned wage investments, healthcare costs, and sales deleverage, partially offset by lower incentive costs. Year-to-date share repurchases: $1.2 billion. Net debt to adjusted EBITDA: 1.91, below the 2.3 to 2.5 target range, creating capital flexibility for the Giant Eagle acquisition expected to close in 2027.

The 265 basis point context โ€” what really hurt the top line

The 0.2% identical sales number would have been meaningfully higher without a specific set of external events. The Inflation Reduction Act created an approximately 140 basis point headwind from pharmacy pricing changes and reimbursement reductions as high-cost drugs came under new pricing frameworks. The ongoing shift from brand-to-generic prescriptions reduced identical sales by approximately 60 basis points. The cyclospora outbreak in produce hit in the final period of the quarter and cost roughly 35 basis points of total company identical sales. Egg deflation contributed another 30 basis point drag. CFO David Kennerley was explicit: these headwinds totaled approximately 265 basis points, all with minimal to zero profit impact. The pharmacy IRA headwind specifically is expected to accelerate to approximately 150 basis points in Q4 as new high-cost drugs including GLP-1s enter the formulary in January โ€” but management noted this will have no profit impact in Q4 or in 2027.

What is actually working โ€” the parts nobody headlines

Ecommerce grew 20% with new-to-brand customers up 20% year-over-year. On-shelf availability reached an all-time high. Pickup perfect orders were described as the best ever. Retail media grew 24%, the company's strongest result since 2021, contributing 88 basis points to gross margin. Private label penetration increased 50 basis points, with Private Selection โ€” Kroger's premium private label tier โ€” up more than 14% on new ready-to-heat and ready-to-eat meals. Management specifically called out a $20 sushi family pack that crossed $1 million in sales in three weeks, and rotisserie chicken sales in the 7-8 PM hour up 72% versus prior levels. Natural, organic, and fresh categories are growing meaningfully ahead of total company sales. None of these are headline numbers, but they're the ones that tell you whether the underlying business model is working.

The cost savings program came in ahead of plan with broad-based contributions from cost of goods sold and goods-not-for-resale initiatives. Management is reinvesting the savings into customer value through a multiyear pricing glide path designed to close specific price gaps versus competitors. Foran described progress on the Circana rest-of-market gap: Kroger maintained or widened its market share advantage against traditional grocery competitors in Q2, which is particularly notable given the produce category headwind from cyclospora.

What CEO Foran said โ€” and why it's worth quoting

Foran is 200 days into one of the bigger jobs in American retail. He was asked directly how to reconcile tight sales with maintained profit guidance and a challenging environment. His answer: "I actually see even more opportunities than what I thought when I started." He named unknown shrinkage, out-of-stocks, goods-not-for-resale costs, imports, and cost of goods as buckets that are "bigger than what I thought after 30 days." That's the statement of someone who arrived at a company and found it has more self-help potential than the external environment reflects. Whether that conviction is justified gets tested over the next several quarters. He also said: "Give us a year, we will be a lot better than what we look today. Give us another year after that. It will even be better." That's either a well-grounded operational assessment or optimism that the numbers will eventually need to support. The Q2 profit result โ€” 5% EPS growth on 0.2% sales growth โ€” is the first tangible piece of evidence for the former.

The guidance framework and what's implied for H2

Full-year identical sales guidance was cut from 1-2% to 0.2-0.8%. The Q3 and Q4 guidance implies some continued top-line softness, with specific headwinds from cycling prior-year delivery partnership benefits (started October 2025) and significant weather-related sales from Q4 FY2025. Despite the sales cut, full-year adjusted FIFO operating profit guidance was maintained at $5.0 to $5.2 billion and EPS guidance maintained at $5.10 to $5.30. Free cash flow guidance reaffirmed at $2.7 to $2.9 billion. The company has enough levers โ€” cost savings ramping, ecommerce profitability improving, fuel contribution, and media growth โ€” to hold profit guidance even as the sales outlook tightens. That combination, holding profit while cutting sales, is the version of Kroger's financial model that management wants investors to understand before the October investor day where the long-term framework will be laid out in more detail.

The one thing beginners should take away

Kroger's 0.2% identical sales growth headline is technically accurate and analytically misleading. A 265 basis point headwind from pharmacy regulation, produce outbreaks, and egg deflation โ€” all largely transitory โ€” knocked a company that otherwise maintained profit guidance, grew ecommerce 20%, hit a retail media five-year best, and generated $1.2 billion in buybacks. The new CEO's job is a multiyear reset of price gaps, cost structure, and store execution. The Q2 results are the early evidence that you can generate savings-funded value investment while protecting margins, even when the top line is fighting multiple external headwinds simultaneously. Whether the October investor day frames that in a way the market finds credible is the next important moment for KR stock.
